Foyer de garnison

21-23, rue Vauban, Strasbourg

Erected by the military authorities, this building was achevied in 1906. (The emperor Wilhelm visited it the same year on May 26th).
Intended for receiving the privates and non-commisiond officers, it included a pub, several meeting rooms and a concert hall(1) as well as an apartment.
If the architect made up his mind for art nouveau, he prefered the severity of the Jugendstil to the lascivious curves and counter-curves of the french art nouveau(2). It is, for instance, witnessed by the doors, which reject the sensual curves to the benefit of more severe geometric lines.
After World War I, this building has been altered, divided, and changed of use several times(3). As showed by an ancient picture, the left gable has disappeared, as well the two last bays at right and the garden at the street corner. Some vestiges as still visible, like a door handle, a hand-rail, or the capitals of the columns in the former concert hall.

vue générale      état avant transformation

(1) The latter could meet about 400 persons.
(2) Because of the purpose of the building, how could it be different?
(3) It has been a cinema during several decades.
