Magasin Manrique

33-37, rue des Grandes Arcades, Strasbourg in 1897-99 by BERNINGER & KRAFFT

Formerly a haberdashery and hosiery(1), this shop bears witness to the very beginnings of art nouveau in Strasbourg. Its metallic architecture allows to use large windows as shown by the three first levels. If the decor still has difficulty to get rid of eclecticism as it is attested by the top of the right bay(2), we can on the other ascribe to art nouveau the flower pots represented at the third level.

(1) The Manrique shop belonged to Goehrs & Co, the latter being owned by the traders Gustav Beck & Georg Schweitzer.
(2) Although added 3 years later.
